Jeff Sampson

I’ve been an amateur musician my whole life, beginning with singing Gregorian church music and along with the classical records my father played in my early single-digit years. From 1970 to 1979 I morphed into a “professional” musician – and again in the early aughts (until roughly 2012).

Primarily, I’m a vocalist. Over my lifetime, I’ve swung between dabbling and focusing-on piano, synthesizers (hardware and software), percussion, and reeds (clarinet, harmonica and WX-5). My ability to make my voice sound like something other than (particularly this century) is something I take pride in. I’m also fond of moving found sounds and field recordings into sonic dissimilarities. Several semi-lengthy attempts at playing guitar have done nothing but prove I’m horrible at it.

My listening and creating tastes lean heavily on structured non-formulaic music that pushes envelopes and ignores boundaries. Occasionally, I’ve been known to like something “everyone” else does. Less occasionally than that, I’ve created something more than a few people like.

Lover of words and sounds that might be words
